My short story for my english assignment. It's like 8 pages... I dunno if it counts as a short story >.>
I''l just put it on, while ai write it
Small, flickering flames inside the hundreds of gas lamps lit up the streets of London; casting off playful, dancing shadows onto the roads. The sun departed with a farewell of golden skies and diffused light, seeping beyond the horizon. In this moment, walks a small kitten down the middle of the street, its fur glowing orange from the last rays of sunshine. Her paws padded gently against the smooth surface of the ground, leaving soft trails of sound into the night. Behind her followed a kitten black as coal with eyes shining violet. It yawned, stopped and then meowed as if complaining. The white kitten slowed its pace, then replied with a flick of her tail and continued on. With a roll of violet eyes the black one followed again.
"Alice," spoke the black cat, breaking the stillness of the night. After no reply it called out again, this time dragging the name. "Aliiiiiiice!"
"What is it?!" snapped Alice, her tone sounding strange for such a soft looking kitten.
"What are you doing?" She watched from below as the white-coated cat struggled to lift herself onto the wooden fence. With a glee of success, Alice managed to pull herself upright, straighten her back, and grin from where she was standing.
"The moon is quite beautiful when you can see it all without disruption. Come on up Olivia, there's plenty of room! "
"Thank you, but I don't fancy heights, so I think I'll stick to the earth instead of trying to fly." Olivia turned to walk away.
"Please! You promised me that you would go out on a stroll with me tonight! Remember? And Olivia Silverwing never breaks her promises right?" Her hopeful voice nagged at Olivia and she turned back around with a defeated sigh.
"Very well Alice Delvin, since you obviously can't stay out in the night alone, I'll be the helpful friend I am and accompany you." She leaped gracefully and landed with ease beside her companion, a smug smile tugging at the corners of her mouth. Together they made their way atop the fence, curving sideways and leaping onto the roofs of houses.
"What do you think about the killings, Olivia?" inquired Alice, after they had finished winding their way through the city.
"There have been two murders this past week hasn't there? I'm not sure what to think. It's not like murders don't happen in London. People go missing here all the time." Olivia faced Alice, "Why do you ask?"
"It's just that..." Alice trailed off, she focused her eyes on something else, "The two people, we knew who they were. Do you think the murderer could also be someone we know?" There was no response from Olivia and Alice finally stole a peak at her face. Olivia's eyes were clouded; she stared hard into the night.
They stopped on the roof of a neighbor’s mansion, quite near where they lived. It was after dusk now and the moon had rose from behind the clouds. Along the silver light, they watched as Mr. Hanson made his way towards the house down the road with an armload of groceries. Olivia turned her gaze back towards her friend and watched with interest at the peculiar expression Alice had on.
"Olivia," she whispered eyes still on Mr. Hanson. "How old is Mr. Hanson?" She could sense that Alice was trying to change the subject.
"I believe he's somewhere in his sixties."
"Sixties!" Alice turned towards Olivia, "Well don't you stand there! Let's help him. Poor man, he must be exhausted carrying those bags." Alice leaped down from the roof onto some stairs and motioned her head towards Olivia.
Olivia shook her head, "Mr. Hanson is almost to his house, Alice, and I'm not going to ruin my night for something so petty." The white kitten blinked and momentarily changed eye color, crimson almost like blood. Olivia felt the hair on her neck stick up, but then saw that the kitten's eyes were now blue again.
"Fine, stay here, I'll be back in a moment." And with that, Alice turned and pranced towards the old brick house, transforming into a beautiful blonde girl on the way.
Olivia turned her eyes towards the direction of The Great Clock of Westminster. She remembered when the clock became operational in 1859, how everyone had gathered around for the ceremony and how the chime had scared her, for she was only a child then. Every New Years the clock would chime 13 times, eventually making it a tradition. She refocused on Alice, who was now bidding farewells to the joyful old man. She noted how intently Alice was looking at Mr. Hanson, almost like she was studying him. She shook the thoughts away as Alice walked back towards her with a dazzling smile. "Should we make our way back home? I'm a bit tired."
"It's only 9:30 Alice. Did you lose your breath carrying those heavy bags?"
"You know our strength doesn't diminish that easily." She waved her hand in the air, giving off an exaggerated sigh, "I don't know why but, I just feel a bit anxious." Alice began down the street, strolling past Olivia.
"You're not going to transform are you?" Olivia watched as Alice continued to make her way towards home, ignoring the question. Olivia followed behind unwillingly, morphing into a human under the flicker of the light. Unlike Alice, Olivia had ruffled convoluted hair. It mirrored the night and blurred in the smokey gas lamps. Thick black bangs covered her forehead, ending above bright knowing violet eyes.
She rounded on a corner, ending up in another street. Alice was already twenty feet ahead, pacing madly and turning at the edge of the street. Olivia lingered behind, wanting to enjoy more of the moonlight. Night was the safest and easiest time for a Werecat. It didn't hurt as much to transform when the sun was out of sight, but it’s terribly painful to change states directly under sunlight. She pondered on that thought until something caught her eye. Someone was watching her. The feeling of uncertainty and nervousness; she hated that feeling.
She was afraid.
Blue eyes pierced into her own violets as she whirled around to face the stranger. He sat slouching against a fence wall. A tall black bowler hat slanted across his head, covering disheveled brown hair. He had his knees up with his arms loosely spread across. Although his pose portrayed relaxation, his eyes were stern and demanding. She felt a chill ran up her neck.
"Who are you?" Being curtious didn't seem important anymore. Her heart thumped wildly and this stranger seemed dangerous.
"River," he replied quietly. His voice was deep and velvety, almost inviting.
Why is my heart beating like it's about ready to explode?
"What is your business here? I have lived here all my life and have never seen your face before."
He narrowed his eyes and spoke louder, "My business here does not concern you." He stood up, brushing back the black traveling cloak that draped over his front. "You do not know what is happening here. I suggest you leave before it involves you."
Olivia blinked, confused and bewildered, thoughts racing through her head. "What are you implying?"
"Am I not clear? I'm telling you to leave." He spoke with such authority, Olivia could not help but stagger back. She struggled to voice her retort.
"Who are you, to tell me what I should or shouldn't do?" It took all her effort for her not to crack her voice. She stepped back, fumbling what to say next as he edged closer. His face inches away from hers; she could no longer hear herself breathe.
"You don't need to know who I am." He was done. He stepped away from her slowly, still holding eye contact until he put a good distance between them. He turned on his heel and walked down the street pulling out a cane, as if he were merely returning from a night's walk.
His black cloak billowed in the wind. |

It was the next day after the eventful night. Alice had made her way home without waiting for Olivia so she had not yet told her of the encounter with the man. "Good morning Alex, is Alice present at the moment?"
"I don't know, maybe you should come inside and see." The boy, looking not much older than Olivia, angled himself towards her, leaning his body on the doorframe. Alexander Devlin was Alice's twin brother. Despite their similar looks, they were total opposites. Alex, did everything he could to irritate his audience while Alice, tried to help out wherever she could. He found it humorous.
Olivia sighed; she had no time for this. "I have very serious matters to discuss with your sister. Please, is she home or not?"
"Is it so important that you had to come over four in the morning?" He lowered his head and yawned, strands of wavy blonde hair covering his eyes. He resembled his sister, with his hair light yellow and his eyes bright blue. His jaw line was more prominent however, he had a straighter and higher nose, and there was something that twinkled when you looked deep inside his eyes, something mischievous.
"Alex, you know very well that it's after noon."
His gaze shifted back, ignoring her comment. With an eyebrow lifted, he spoke in a serious tone "Have you read today’s paper?"
He continued after she shook her head, "The murderers back."
“What!” She said, half shouting. “When, where, who?”
“Whoa, slow down I can only answer one question at a time.”
Olivia wasn’t listening though, her mind slowly drifted back to yesterday’s night without her noticing. Why am I suddenly thinking about that man, River? She shook herself into reality again, “What?”
“I said it was Mr. Hanson. You know the old man that lives alone, a block away from your house?” Alex shook his head, “May his soul find peace… Olivia!” But she was already gone, pushing him aside and running into the mansion. She had to find Alice, and tell her about River. She was positive he was the murderer.
Her head was spinning as she slowed down at the entrance of the huge aristocratic mansion. The entrance was wide, with a sitting room and refreshment stand on either side of the marble staircase. Alice’s room was on the third floor, far west of the mansion. Olivia lost no time sprinting up the many flights of stairs. She stopped in front of a beautiful white door, flowers were carved into the wood. Olivia hesitated before knocking. A beautiful sing-song voice welcomed her.
“Come in.”
Olivia obeyed, stepping into the light breezed room, her black ringlets blowing into her face; she took her hand and brushed it away.
“Alice, you left without waiting for me to catch up. I had no time to tell you what had occurred while I was behind.” Olivia breathed, watching Alice's beautiful, blonde eyebrows arch up. “On the other side of the fence, surrounding Mr. Hanson’s house, there was a suspicious looking man.” She hesitated before continuing, “He had a shady character, so I asked him who he was. He called himself River.”
“River? You mean River Cross?” asked Alice after a long silence. Olivia gave her a questioning look. “River Cross,” Alice nodded knowingly, “He’s been reported across London several times now. He’s in charge of a mysterious organization. No one knows what it’s about though.”
“He told me to leave, before I got myself involved. I didn’t know what he meant, but I think it had something to do with the murder of Mr. Hanson.” Her voice grew quieter as she spoke, watching Alice’s reactions carefully. Alice narrowed her eyes.
“Oh?”
“Yes, I asked him if he had any business in this neighborhood but he replied quite rudely.”
“How so?”
“He said it was none of my concern.” She wrinkled her eyebrows and stared out the window, deep in thought.
“He could be the murderer.”
“That’s what I was thinking myself; after hearing the news from Alex.”
“Whatever the case, we have to report it to the police, or at least our parents.”
Olivia nodded her head in agreement, walking over swiftly to sit on the bed, beside Alice. Something crumpled under her weight and she pulled out a pile of newspaper clippings from under her. "What's this?" Olivia asked, shifting through the headlines. Alice made a quick move and jerked it out of her hands.
"It's, It's nothing." She walked across the room, placing the papers in a music box that decorated her book shelf. She turned to Olivia, eyes widen and staring at the red liquid seeping through her fingers.
"Blast! I must've cut myself when you yanked the papers from me." Olivia said, startled at how much blood was rushing out of the wound. "Oh no, it's getting on my dress. Alice, help me find a towel!"
Alice was still standing there, eyes growing wider with every past second. Her hands clutched either side of her arms, gripping the flesh so tight her her knuckles had turned white. Without another word, she turn and fled from the room.
"Alice?" Olivia called after her. There was no reply. Olivia got off the bed and slowly to the washroom located at the back of the room. She went in and closed the door, wondering what happened to Alice. Why did she want to keep the newspaper clippings a secret? Olivia had a glimpse at one headline before the papers were teared from her hand. It was about the first murder. Of course, it would be normal for Alice to be interested in the biggest murder case happening all in one section of the city. But for her to hide it? Olivia rinsed her cut under the water and reached for the towel hanging beside her. She froze as she felt another presence in the room.
"That's why she left the house in such a hurry."
Olivia turned and faced the speaker. It was Alex, tilting his head slightly, with beautiful blonde hair tucked behind his ear. The only difference was that his eyes were stern and his voice cold.
"What's wrong? Is she alright?"
"No, she's not alright." He stared down at her hard, "I think you should leave, Olivia."
"What makes you think you can make me leave? I've already been rudely dismissed by someone and will not tolerate it again!"
"Oh, but I can make you leave. This is my house and if you're here without an invitation, I can call the police on you." He glared at her, all kindness gone from his eyes.
Slightly hurt, Olivia softly said, "What's happened to you Alexander. You and Alice have been so different these past weeks."
He lowered his voice to match hers, "I'm not sure Olivia. It's just too confusing, we're dealing with it as best we can. I promise we'll have this all figured out soon."
Olivia found herself nodded absent-mindedly. Anything to help her calm her confusion. She backed out the door, eyeing Alex; his pale skin and worn out expression. What was going on? |

It was cold and grey outside. Although it was only five, the fog had already found itself into the city and enveloped anything over twenty feet away. Great clouds of smoke from gas lamps covered the street. Olivia hugged herself to prevent from shivering. She exited the great iron gates that lead to Alice's house. Her eyes wandered about, watching. She made her way down the road, making sure not to turn her head. It did not work, she could still feel someones stare boring into her back. Olivia turned her head around, eyeing the fading mansion. Was that a black cloak she saw? Her heart missed a beat, it couldn't be, not here. She quickend her pace, smoke and wind blowing into her stinging eyes. Her boot accidently caught the end of her dress, making her tumble down. Pain shot up her leg. There was a scrape on her knee and a single drop of blood trickled down, staining the hem of her dress. She cursed herself for being so ignorant. She quickly wiped the blood away with her henkercheif, then tied it around the scrape to prevent it from bleeding. Olivia stood up and stared ahead, she blinked. Was it her imagination, or was there a doll at the end of the road. It was standing, yet it's arms were dangling lifelessly at it's sides. Glass blue eyes broke through the fog, singling out Olivia. She took a step foward, wanting a closer look at the alluring doll. It seemed to be beckoning at her, those glass eyes. She took a few more steps closer, but then she saw that it wasn't a doll at all, it was Alice. Her eyes were cold, her beautiful dress ripped and there was blood, dripping down her chin. Her expression changed; she smiled. It was a horribly terrifying smile, one that wasn't right. The smile was sick and twisted and made the hairs on Olivia's neck stand. Everything that happened next was a blur to Olivia. She remembered a blood curling scream that happened to be coming from her open mouth. She remembered Alice, ravishing Alice, reaching out her arms and jumping towards her, a gruesome smile still etched onto her face. Olivia's head smashed into the pavement below, knocking the breath out of her lungs. She gasped as the pain took over and clenched her fists tightly into a ball. After a while, the pain subsided and she was able to recall what had occurred. Pushing herself off the ground, she looked around and was shocked to see River. He stood a few feet away from her, wrestling with what looked like giant deformed cat. There were remnants of Alice's dress scattered around them as they fought. The demon roared ferousciusly and attacked River, knocking him over.
"Are you alright?" Olivia cried out in alarm.
"I'm fine, you should worry more about your head injury," he replied curtly. He jmped up before the demon had a chance to overthorw him and swiftly tripped it. River took out his cane, twirled it around and struck the demon before it had the chance to get up. The demon let out a shrilling cry of agony before merging in to subconsciousness. Olivia watched silently as the demon slowly shrank it's size. The colour had also changed, it grew lighter and lighter, until it was white as snow. Now, the little kitten looked so out of place; lost in a cold forgotten world.
Olivia blinked back her tears. "Alice," she choked, unable to say anything more.
River sensed her distress and slowly made his way towards her. "I couldn't let her kill any more. She needs to be properly treated right away. If she isn't, she'll end up waking up very hungry."
"But why? How?"
"It is the burdan that Werecats carry. Even if only a single drop of blood were to touch a Werecat's lips, they are forever succumbed to their original form."
"Original form?"
"Werecats weren't always civilized."
River bent down to pick up Alice. He swung the limp kitten over his shoulder and strode past Olivia. She quickly turn around to face his back. "Wait! How do you know all this?"
He stopped and very quietly said, "It's our job to know. To protect the secrets from any outsiders and to keep you cats in place."
"Is that the purpose of your organization?"
"That is none of your concern." He began walking again, slowly disappearing into the night.
"Wait!" Olivia called out into the darkness, "Where are you taking Alice?"
After a small silence, he answered "She'll be back in the morning." And once again, he was gone. His cane, twirling in his hand, until even that was engulfed in darkness.
Knock Knock
The noise was almost deafening compared to the silence of the house. A sing-song voice welcomed the newcomer from behind the white door.
"Come in."
Alice, dressed in a beautiful puff-sleeved blouse and long ruffled skirt, sat behind a piano, smiling over her books. "Olivia!"
"Oh, Alice how are you feeling?" Olivia rushed in through the door and went beside her best friend. She was surprised to see Alice smile.
"I'm absolutely perfect, although it's hard to play the piano with this cast on." She was refferring to the large clump of white substance wrapped around her arm.
Olivia gave a nervous laugh, "Yes, it must be... Alice?"
"Hm?"
"Why did you run off on on me yesterday? You nearly gave me a heart attack."
"Oh, I'm so sorry, I forgot that I had an errand to do. You know, I barely remember getting this cast. The docter said I must have fainted somehow and broke my arm falling." She shook her head in amusement, "I feel so weird now. I barely remember what happened these past weeks except little fragments that come up here and there."
"So, you don't know anything about the killings?"
"Was I suppose to know?" She looked at Olivia quizzically. Olivia merely shook her head smiling. River Cross who exactly is he? She walked toards Alice's bookshelf, and peaked under the beautiful music box, it was empty except for a necklace Olivia had given her for her 16th Birthday.
"Olivia?"
"I was just checking to see if you still had the necklace I got you." Olivia said, still smiling.
"I see," Alice paused, looking at Olivia suspiciously.
"What is it?"
"You... You seem a bit strange. Did something happen?"
Olivia was grinning now, she turned her head towards the view of the roads outside through the window. "No, everything is how it should be."
And it was, the sun was shining, it was a beautiful day and she could just make out a flutter of a black cloak turning a corner. "River Cross," she murmered. |
